The Always Aggressive Jacky Durant
A group of 4 relatively unknown riders broke away after the 43 km mark of the race. Over the next 20 kms Patrick Roelandt, Hervé Meyvisch, Jacky Durand and Thomas Wegmüller opened a 22 minute lead. Slowly the lead began to come down but the group still had a 16 minute when the first climb, the Oude Kwaremont, started.
Finally sensing the time gap, the peloton began to take the breakaway seriously. The Ariostia led chase split when a group led by Johan Museeuw and Laurent Jalabert moved off the front on the Molenberg. With 60 kms to go and the time gap rapidly tumbling Jacky Durand and Thomas Wegmüller dropped Roelandt and Meyvisch.
The hard chasing group now trailed by 2’30” on the steep Muur de Gammont. Over the Muur the always aggressive Jacky Durant could wait no longer. A tiring Wegmuller could no longer hold Durant’s wheel on the final climb, the Bosberg.
The Frenchman rode the final 13 kms and across the finish line 48 second ahead of Wegmuller and 1’44” in front of third placed Edwig Van Hooydonck.
